The Grand Traverse Bay YMCA has been a cornerstone of our community since 1963. From humble beginnings, we have grown into a vital resource connecting people across northern Michigan to their potential, their purpose, and to each other. What began as a group of dedicated volunteers is now a multi-facility organization serving thousands of community members annually. As our community evolves, so do we—continuing to expand our reach and adapt our services to meet growing needs and create lasting impact.
Our leadership includes a volunteer board of directors and a dedicated team of professional staff, consisting of local community leaders who guide our strategic direction with passion and purpose. Our staff members bring expertise and heart to our daily operations, while our extensive network of community partners—including Munson Healthcare, GT Metro, and Traverse City Area Public Schools, —helps extend our impact beyond our walls.
Together, we create opportunities for everyone to learn, grow, and thrive regardless of age, income, or background.
Grand Traverse Bay YMCA Mission
The purpose of the YMCA is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. We bring this mission to life through three areas of impact:
- Youth Development: Empowering young people through childcare, swim lessons, youth sports, and leadership opportunities
- Healthy Living: Improving health and well-being with fitness programs, chronic disease prevention initiatives, and wellness education
- Social Responsibility: Inspiring action in our community through volunteerism, outreach programs, and collaborative partnerships

Transforming Lives, Strengthening Communities
The Grand Traverse Bay YMCA’s commitment to strengthening the community takes many forms:
- Increasing Access for All: Annually, we provide over $140,000 in financial assistance, ensuring we have the resources to welcome all, regardless of their capacity to pay.
- Teaching Life Saving Skills: Our Safety Around Water program partners with 16 local schools to teach essential water safety skills to over 750 third-grade students. Supported by our annual campaign and generous donors, we are able to provide this essential program free of cost.
- Youth Development: From early learning and after-school care to summer camps and youth sports, we nurture the potential of more than 3,000 children each year Every child we serve represents a future leader, teammate, or neighbor – and investing in them today builds a stronger, more connected community for tomorrow.
- Supporting Community Wellness: Our evidence-based community health initiatives like Matter of Balance and Livestrong at the YMCA help hundreds of older adults and individuals with chronic conditions improve their quality of life. These classes offer more than just physical benefits-they foster connection, restore confidence, and remind participants that they are never alone on their wellness journey.
More than a gym, we are a gathering place where people from different backgrounds, perspectives, and generations can connect through YMCA community events, and classes.
Responsible Stewardship
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we are committed to transparent financial management and responsible stewardship of our resources. Our Annual YMCA Impact Report provides detailed information about our sources of funding, program expenses, and community impact. It highlights how we invest in mission-driven programs that strengthen our community, ensuring every dollar entrusted to us goes where they make the greatest impact
Through the continued generosity of donors, grantors, and members, we are able to expand our reach, support those in need, and maintain long-term financial health while keeping our focus on what matters most: people.
